This is something that most professional writers will easily attest to: we are what we write. Or at least… through writing, one gets a valuable chance to express himself – and to clear out some of his inner demons. Every writer cannot help but to put a little of who he is in what he writes; some writers actually pour themselves out into what they do, to the point where sometimes it’s not simple to tell the writer apart from his work. Edgar Allen Poe is a shining example – or should one say… an ominously dark example of this principle. Everyone knows about his terrific work which consistently focused the darkest aspects of the human being; some people also know that he too, was a man who endured great sufferings which stemmed from his dark personality; what many people don’t know is that despite having written several tomes on such issue, Poe wasn’t capable of exorcising his inner demons… not in his lifetime.

While he was alive, Edgar Allen Poe was a prolific and skillful writer; however, like most of the great artists, he didn’t get much attention until after he died. Only a long time after his life expired, did his work gain recognition for its unique style and approach; well, there’s a good chance that Poe’s troubled spirit craved such recognition with such intensity that it actually roamed around the earth for a long while. Decades after his untimely death occurred, reports surfaced about an alleged apparition which consistently roamed around his grave. Throughout the years, many people have seen a man dressed black walking towards Poe’s final resting place… most notably on January 19, Poe’s birthday. According to legend, the dark-clad figure would be seen walking towards the grave of Edgar Allen Poe on the 19th of January, carrying a bottle of cognac and three roses. Not once did anyone gather the courage to approach this figure, and according to legend it were a black scarf over it face. But everyone who’s witnessed the apparition claimed it always makes the same ritual – ominously approaching the grave, leaving its tribute and fading into the night. There are many who believe this actually is the ghost of Edgar Allen Poe, honoring his past self.
